The rock wren is a small, ground-feeding bird found in the Southern Alps of the South Island, NZ. It remains an endangered bird and is endemic (native) to Aotearoa. It was named "bird of the year 2022".
Piwauwau means "little complaining bird" in Maori.
The wren carries deep spiritual symbolism. Its small size reminds us that even the tiniest of creatures can possess great strength and resilience. The wren’s ability to adapt to various environments speaks to our own capacity for growth and transformation.
